Aside from a prepared comparison with the iPad, the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet was a little camera shy at the Web 2.0 summit yesterday, but Engadget managed to score a few precious minutes with RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie for a quick tour. Aside from dropping the bomb that the BlackBerry PlayBook would have a module cavity to upgrade the tablet, RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie also mentioned at the Web 2.0 summit that they’d “be fools” not to include near-field communications in a BlackBerry smartphone in the near future. Verizon has been getting their staff ready for BlackBerry 6 starting with an internal launch event two weeks ago, and is in the midst of testing device software that has been leaked for some time. One user who was running such a leaked OS (6.0.0.280) on the 9650 received a notification to update their e-mail setup app, which is at least a sign that Verizon is still working on a public rollout, though no release dates have been announced.

Dell has announced that they’re offering about 25,000 of their employees a Venue Pro handset running Windows Phone 7 to replace their corporate BlackBerry. Dell also plans to do the same with Android once they release the Venue. Although this might be seen as some sign of allegiance to their own mobile solutions, the company line is that this is a budget issue that could reduce mobile communications costs by 25% through eliminating the need for a BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Just when RIM had pretty much emptied out everything they had been working on lately, like the Style, Bold 9780, and Torch, we’re starting to get wind of the next batch of BlackBerry devices. Rogers and Telus launched their refreshed BlackBerry Bolds this week, and Bell isn’t one to be left out of the party. Today the device hit shelves with a $124.95 pricetag on a three-year contract. If you’re in the UK, and carry a BlackBerry as your daily driver, the BBC iPlayer app for BlackBerry is now available for you… Well, almost.

Turns out this isn’t much of an application at all, but rather a desktop launcher that opens the iPlayer website. Disappointing for sure, but I suppose this does remove one step from the equation. Following up on the RIM’s first slider, the BlackBerry Torch 9800, rumour has it the next one will be smaller and cheaper. The reduced size suggests that such a device would have a condensed keyboard like the Pearl series, but that’s just fun with Photoshop at this point. Exactly how much cheaper we’re talking is open to interpretation, but it would have to be a significant drop in price if the top-end Torch is selling for $99 on contract.

The rollout of the BlackBerry Bold 9780 keeps coming, and this morning I have a little more news to that effect. Word has it that Virgin Mobile Canada will launch the BlackBerry Bold 9780 in White. Nice!
